As data continues to become an integral element of all business decisions, the role of the Chief Data Officer (CDO) has parallelly evolved far beyond managing data, to now include strategic leadership. Steering the ship in a captain’s capacity comprises building alignment with all C-level executives to influence critical business outcomes.
Strategic decisions taken by the CDO’s team influence multiple spheres of a business, the foremost being product innovation. AI and advanced analytics directly impact essential business facets like the review of customer data for meaningful insights, audit of social media statistics, and assessment of sales figures.
Using machine learning algorithms, AI can assist in identifying new trends and patterns in consumer data and help collate multiple sources of information and derive sense from them. However, the technology can be best utilized only when a data-driven approach is incorporated across an organization. This is where the role of the CDO carries great significance.
Instilling a data-first culture means encouraging non-technical teams to also embrace data-driven decision-making. It is equally imperative to adhere to data governance requirements. With that in place, data teams, led by the CDO, can start to identify opportunities for monetizing data. They must study and implement the best practices for leveraging data for competitive advantage and revenue growth, while tracking key metrics and KPIs to assess the success of data initiatives.
