As AI systems become more sophisticated, there is an increasing demand for professionals who not only understand the underlying technology but also grasp its broader implications across business, policy, and ethics. Addressing this need, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is launching its first undergraduate program, a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence, designed to blend technical expertise with leadership and entrepreneurial acumen.
MBZUAI’s program places AI at its core, covering areas such as machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics. The program takes an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating business strategy, market analysis, industrial design, and management—skills essential for applying AI in practical settings. The curriculum emphasizes experiential learning through industry collaborations, cooperative placements, and mentorships with AI researchers and practitioners.
The launch of this undergraduate degree aligns with the UAE’s strategic vision of expanding AI capabilities. His Excellency Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of MBZUAI’s Board of Trustees, stated: “This program will equip the next generation of homegrown talent with deep technical expertise and an understanding of AI’s broader impact,” he said, adding that it will strengthen the nation’s workforce and contribute to global AI advancements.
MBZUAI’s curriculum integrates AI into every aspect of the educational journey, enhancing students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students will explore advanced AI topics like deep learning and generative AI, alongside areas such as AI for health, sustainable living, and mixed reality. They will work with global leaders in AI research and development, gaining hands-on experience with state-of-the-art large language models like MBZUAI’s own JAIS and K2.
MBZUAI President Eric Xing stated, “We are reshaping what it means to be educated in AI—producing engineers, entrepreneurs, designers, and innovators prepared to drive AI across all sectors.” The program also emphasizes cross-disciplinary training, offering exposure to humanities, business, and liberal arts, and includes industry placements and internships.
This pioneering program, open to both local and international students, positions MBZUAI at the forefront of AI education. “We’re building future generations of AI innovators ready to transform industries and drive global progress,” Professor Xing concluded.
